COMAL: setting up UniCOMAL in Windows 3.x

Setting up UniCOMAL V3.11 Students' for MS-Windows 3.1

Although UniCOMAL is a DOS package, it runs well in most versions of MS-Windows. It can be installed to run in from MS-Windows 3.1 (or 3.11). This note describes how best to set up UniCOMAL V3.11 Students' in a Windows 3.1-based PC.

Starting from Windows Program Manager:

Open the MAIN folder
Double-click on the MS-DOS prompt icon - you should get a black screen with
```
C:\WINDOWS>_
```
on it.

Now follow the instructions on pages 2 and 3 of the Student Comal Welcome Guide:

put the UniComal diskette into Drive A:
```
      MD C:\STCOMAL
      XCOPY A:\*.* C:\STCOMAL /S  
```
- watch out to get the two slash characters (\ and /) right. There's no need to worry about changing the COMAL.PRO file (as mentioned in the welcome guide), because the package is supplied ready to work from Drive C.

Once the copying is done, type in EXIT and press ENTER. This will take you back to Windows 3.1.

Now to make a new Program Group for "Programming", and a new Program Item for "Student Comal":

Click File, then New, then OK. This will give a "Program Group Properties" window.
Type in Programming in the Description box, then click OK. A new window called "Programming" appears.
Click File, then New, then OK. You should get a "Program Item Properties" window. Fill the boxes in like this:

       Description: Student Comal
      Command Line: C:\STCOMAL\COMAL.EXE
 Working Directory: C:\STCOMAL
```
- then click OK.

A new MS-DOS icon labelled Student Comal should appear in the window. Double-clicking on this icon runs Comal from inside Windows.

The icon can be changed to the UniComal icon provided for running from Windows. This is done by clicking the Student Comal icon, then clicking File, Properties and Change Icon. You then have to type in the path to the new icon - C:\STCOMAL\COMAL.ICO, then click OK.
